Hattiesburg, MS: A lot of people dream to be able to own a horse one day, much less become an expert on one. That is one thing that local barrel racer, Jena Cox, can truly brag about. Jena Cox is an amateur barrel racer who has a full time job and a family but still finds time to attend races around Hattiesburg just about every other weekend. Most of the races that Jena participates in are around the Pine Belt area but she has traveled as far as Kentucky to participate in some amateur races as well.
On top of everything else, Jena runs a full-time boarding facility in Oak Grove. “Why not try and make a little extra money when you have to come out and clean, feed, and maintain everyday anyway?” Jena said. Jena keeps up with about 4-5 horses seven days a week. Jena began riding at a very early age and fell so in love with it that she never looked back. It all started when Jena was lunging and jumping her horse and realized that this wasn’t enough, this wasn’t fast enough. So she decided to start barrel racing.
All events that Jena attends are all locally sponsored and owned around the city of Hattiesburg and everyone in the community really comes together and puts on a great show at these barrel runs/rodeos.
