Since he was a kid, Justin Martin was in love with music. When he turned five he would sit in the living room and pretend that he was hosting a radio show. His mom would ask him if he wanted to go outside and play and he would respond with, "Mom if I go outside and play then who is going to run the radio show. Power lifter Cierra Bernard has the dream of winning a title one day. Small town Texas native brought her talents to Hattiesburg when she decided to attend the University Of Southern Mississippi . She has been a powerlifter for the past eight years. With just weeks away, she prepares herself for the Mississippi nationals. She trains six days a week which doesn't give her a lot of time for school and her part time job. Cierra states, "I created a planner to help me manage my time with work and my school assignments." Powerlifting is a form of competitive weightlifting in which contestants attempt three types of lift in a set sequence. The three types of lift are dead lift, bench press, and squat. During competition you have three attempts to lift each weight. Powerlifting is not considered a sport you see a lot of African Americans pursuing. Cierra wants to be an inspiration to others to prove that is possible to achieve anything you put your mind to. Cierra is beyond excited on the improvements she's had so far. She has never felt stronger out of her eight years of training. She looks foward to the upcoming years, and hopefully will get the title she's been working towards. Student Musicians of the University of Southern Mississippi are not only a small melting pot of the university's music department, but a community of inspiring pupils. Rowling, a new sport has arrived at The University of Southern Mississippi. Donavan Hill is the youngest person ever to be elected to the McComb City Council. He is responsible for ward 4 which consist of three neghiborhoods Algiers, Beartown and Whiteacres. Hill is from Algiers and takes on the challenge of restoring his community. Latisha is currently a University of Southern Miss student and has one dream, and that is to be successful as a musician. She has been playing guitar since she was seven years old. This is more than just a hobby for Latisha, this is how she takes care of herself and how she is able to help provide for her family. Latisha says, " She will be happy and content when everyone see's her name in lights."Jay Meeks, the owner of snow cone franchise Kona Ice, proves that with the right business model, anything is possible. Although he was initially just an investor in the business, Meeks had to take the franchise over when his business party fell into bankruptcy. Meeks, a first time business owner, commented on the difficulties of selling snow cones during the winter months and said, “Financially, you have to do your business plan to reflect the slow down periods in December, January, and part of February.” However, selling snow cones has its perks. Meeks made $20,000 during the month of October, which is an unlikely time of the year to sell frozen beverages. Despite the setbacks he has had, Meeks says, “We’re committed to the business, and I’m going to make it successful.” For nearly four years, Mackenzie Chamblee's life has revolved around guitars. It's safe to say that trend will continue into the future. In the beginning, it was not about music for Chamblee. "Me and my friend Adam bought guitars, so we could look cool," Chamblee said. "It really took me playing one to realize how much I loved music." Today, Chamblee plays guitar in the West Jones High School Band. "It's fun knowing that you get to do what you love at school," Chamblee said. "I want to continue playing it once I graduate hopefully at Southern Miss." Chamblee's influences over the years include Frank Zappa, John Frusciante and David Gilmore. People have been modding their vehicles for many years. Most of the time that is associated with the movies of racing, when some just modify their cars just to personalize their vehicle to make it their own. Dustin has been into cars his entire life. His dad was the one who got him his start and now he carries on on his own. |
