Southern Prohibition’s head brewer, Ben Green, has a passion for making great beer for the Hattiesburg community.
Since it was founded in 2008 at Keg and Barrel, Southern Prohibition has truly been a community effort. The brewery began by making small batches of beer and selling pints in the restaurant.
The Mississippi beer law changed on July 1, 2012 because of the work done by an organization called Raise Your Pints. The new law raised the ABV from 5 percent to 8 percent, and with this change, Neal employed Quinby Chunn to help him grow the business. The two renovated a 1940s furniture warehouse into what is now the Southern Prohibition brewery.
Local artist Rodney Richardson designed SoPro’s cans, which each feature images resembling old horror movie posters. A local metalworker also makes all of SoPro’s tap handles.
SoPro brewery has four year-round brews, as well as many seasonal and barrel aged offerings. The company cans and kegs all its beers and distributes throughout Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee.
Southern Prohibition offers brewery tours every Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. For $8, beer lovers can get five samples, a souvenir glass and a look inside one of Mississippi’s finest craft breweries.
