Live encounters was this week's theme at the Hattiesburg Zoo. June 8-12 was Animal Classification Week, where campers from all over the Hattiesburg area came to encounter and learn about the animals of the jungle.
Campers encountered a series of animals such as a live tarantula, capybaras, tigers, sloths, and anteaters.
This camp of fifteen learned to feed and understand animals in their natural habitats.
Children also played games, made crafts, ate snacks, and learned about fossils. One young camper, Ella, an 11 year old girl said she wants to work at the Hattiesburg Zoo summer camp when she grows up because she enjoyed it so much.
Veteran camp counselor and head of the Children’s Outreach Program, Jeremy Thompson said, “The kids give me energy, being head of outreach gives me more experience on seeing how they work throughout the day, and what I should change, to make it better for the kids."
Thompson has been working for the Hattiesburg Zoo for two years and continues to work with children in summer camps.
