Law enforcement agencies, in 2012, arrested over one million children in the U.S. Although this seems like a large number, it is 37% lower than in 2003.
This dramatic change is what programs like the Boys and Girls Club dedicate their cause to.
The Boys and Girls Club of America provides a place for kids, ages 6 to 18, to build character and enjoy themselves during the summer program from June 1 to July 24.
The Boys and Girls Club of Hattiesburg is partnered with the Salvation Army and has been here for about 25 years. Together these organizations provide staff, activities, and athletics to provide the kids with an eventful summer.
The executive director, Scott Pfaff, makes sure this mission is achieved by overseeing the staff, agenda, and the overall program. "The club's purpose is to mentor today's youth spiritually, mentally, and physically in order to become productive citizens," said Pfaff.
This program includes six staff members and 116 kids.
Tameia, a participant of the summer program, comes to the club frequently and looks forward to the daily activities the club provides.
These activities range from classwork, to arts and crafts, reading, music, athletics, and even field trips.
The Boys and Girls Club of America now hosts over four million kids, according to the Boys and Girls Club Fact Sheet.
By providing a place to build good character and a productive mind, the club helps keep kids from off the street and aid them in striving for a better future.
